1959 Chevrolet Apache: Plugs Fouling and Points Moving?
Have a 59 Apache 3100 1/2 ton 2WD 6cly 235. Truck had sat in a field for 12 years before we got it. The carb is rebuilt, new springs, ran an overhead, and all was running great for 6 months. Now we are fouling out all six spark plugs in less than a week. They are dark like its buring oil and smell rich but probably only because the fuel wasn't burning. It isn't blowing smoke unless reved high. The cylinder compression is good. New seals and the valve guides and seats are good. Even the rings have minimal wear. And for some reason the points are moving. The adjustment moves from .016 to almost 0. But as i said its new. Any suggestions could help me in a new direction. I'm out of ideas. Thanks
You need to secure the points plate. Do not use silicone. Get some "Loctite blue" at your auto parts store. Loctite keeps the threads from slipping but allows you to back them off with a screwdriver. An even better solution is to eliminate the points altogether with a conversion kit from Pertronix Corp. They make a drop in kit which replaces the points with a solid state hall effect sensor. It's as easy to install as points, improves the spark and totally eliminates points replacement. The web site is http://www.pertronix.com. They have all the info and links to dealers.
